SAN CESARE DE BUS
César de Bus was born in Cavaillon (France) on February 3, 1544. He was ordained a priest in 1582 and settled in Avignon, gathering around him a group of priests to “practice Christian Doctrine”.
He died on April 15, 1607, Easter Day. Paul VI proclaimed him Blessed on April 27, 1975.
THE CONGREGATION
On September 29, 1592, at Isle sur la Sorgue, in Provence, Father César, ten priests and a deacon met to find the most effective way to teach Christian Doctrine, to draw up some rules of common life, and to ask the Bishop for a place to live together. Thus was born the Congregation of the Christian Doctrine Fathers, approved by Clement VIII on December 23, 1597.
DOCTRINAIRES TODAY
From his own experience, César found five pillars to build his relationship with the Lord: love for Sacred Scripture, Eucharistic Adoration, devotion to Mary, invocation of the Angels and Saints and spiritual accompaniment. These five pillars support the charism of the Doctrinaires.
IN THE FOREGROUND
The informative Process for Father César beatification began in Avignon in 1615 and concluded on April 27, 1975, when he was proclaimed Blessed by Paul VI in St. Peter’s Basilica.
On May 26, 2020, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree on the miracle and Blessed César is proclaimed a Saint.
With immediate and familiar language, he used the Word of God applying it to concrete concepts and situations. Through catechesis, he invited people to be “good Christians,” not only in words, but in behavior.
César worked to adapt the Council of Trent’s “Catechism for Parish Priests” to the faithful, deeply convinced that catechesis is for the recipients.
The Doctrine Fathers are present today in four continents: Italy and France, Brazil, Burundi, and India.
Faithful to the charism of the founder, they work both in parishes and in schools to spread the knowledge of the Word and with a catechesis capable of reaching everyone.
